Bending machines

In bending, the hard part is not making the movement happen — it is accounting for how much the material springs back. That is where the software's work begins.

Angle and springback

After bending, material opens back by an amount that depends on grade, thickness, rolling direction and bend radius. The software calculates how far it must over-bend to reach the target angle; values found in practice are stored in a table and reused on the next run.

Multi-step bending programs

A part rarely finishes in one bend. The order of steps, where the material is positioned at each step and what the operator must do are defined in the program. A wrong order makes the part hit the machine or become impossible to bend.

Back gauge and axis control

Back gauge axes must reach the correct position at every step, repeatably. Servo control and position feedback decide the outcome here.

Part library

Programs for frequently produced parts are stored; the operator selects from a list and the machine sets itself up. New operators reach productive work far sooner.

What the PC layer adds

If the part arrives as a drawing (DXF or a sheet unfold file), a PC application can generate the bend sequence and angles automatically. When several parts must be placed on one sheet, nesting comes in. See PC-based software.
